Động từ đi kèm các thành phần khác nhau. Động từ tường thuật/nhận thức đi với mệnh đề that (suggest that, insist that). Nhiều động từ đi với tân ngữ rồi to + V (ask/advise/want somebody to do). Động từ sai khiến và tri giác (make, let, see, hear) đi với tân ngữ rồi động từ nguyên mẫu không to. Động từ nối (seem, appear, become) đi với bổ ngữ tính từ hoặc danh từ.
Verbs take different complements. Reporting/mental verbs take a that-clause (suggest that, insist that). Many verbs take an object then a to-infinitive (ask/advise/want somebody to do). Causative and perception verbs (make, let, see, hear) take an object then a bare infinitive. Linking verbs (seem, appear, become) take an adjective or noun complement.
