Theo chức năng, câu có thể trần thuật, mệnh lệnh (động từ nguyên mẫu), nghi vấn, hoặc cảm thán (What/How …!). Theo cấu trúc, câu đi từ đơn (một mệnh đề) đến ghép (nối bằng and/but) đến phức (một mệnh đề chính cộng một mệnh đề phụ). Đa dạng loại câu giúp bài viết rõ ràng, dễ đọc.
By function, sentences make statements (declarative), give commands (imperative, base verb), ask questions (interrogative) or express strong feeling (exclamative, What/How …!). By structure they range from simple (one clause) to compound (clauses joined by and/but) to complex (a main clause plus a subordinate one). Varying sentence type keeps writing clear and readable.
